Are you a lover of swing? On the last 31st October, Eramsus tried to serve the music that born among blacks in 30’s. the inheritance of jazz music which played with rhythm section such as double bass and drum, always has their special characteristic with brass section that become a lead in every composition supported by guitar or cello. That night become the luckiest night for them who came because they witnessed a band that has survived for 66 years and still creating. They are Dutch Swing College Band (DSCB) which has established since 5 may 1945 and has won many awards that you can’t imagine.
How’s their music? Imagine that you’re in world war era, the environment of a ballroom in a party which played swing songs to entertain the guess that came to dance, that’s what DSCB presented on that night Pure and classy Classical atmosphere became the main course of Erasmus’s auditorium.
With The well-ordered performance like traditional jazz band, Adrie Braat (double bass), Bob Kaper (music director, clarinet, alto, sax, vocal), Onno de Bruijn(drums),Keesjan Hoogeboom(trumpet, vocal), Frits Kaatee (clarinet, soprano, tenor and baritone sax), Ton Van Bergeijk (guitar, banjo) and Arend Huisman (trombone), who replaces Frits’s brother George Kaatee, stimulated the audience with the awesome opening. From the 2 hours performance of DSCB, the audience satisfied from the curiosity of classic swing. A harmonic and solid performance reflected on the medium-fast tempo and break on repertoire they played. Sometimes they showed a soloist performance like the Swing band we know. They played some famous songs like Heebies Jeebies (Louis Amstrong) or Nuages (Djanggo Reindhart) in their arrangements. Not only in playing the instruments, their vocal also fascinating with the special voice of Benny Goodman, made a perfect combination for the composition. Keesjan, who are the youngest personnel, also showed his existence by his ripe trumpet skill that make the audience “dancing”.
All the audience stamped their feet following the melody as a sign of the amazing performance of DSCB which has many experiences in music, especially in Swing. Geweldige prestaties en dank u voor uw komst naar Indonesië. (sen)
